I'm truly excited about this program The Song Birds, a series that pays tribute to many Black Women who never got the recognition they truly deserved. And, while this series won't correct any of that, it will allow for several generations of Americans to hear them perform and be appreciated.

It was tough enough just being a woman during those early years when Billie Holiday, Dakota Staton, Sarah Vaughn, Lena Horn, Betty Carter, Nina Simone and others were out there trying to make a name for themselves in the world of entertainment. I remember hearing stories about the Chitlin' Circuit during the days of Jim Crow, segregation and racial unrest like many of us will never know.

So, keeping that in mind, and considering the reality of all that pressure as part of their everyday lives, I felt it was necessary to do this series for no other reason than to support the Black Music History and SpotLight the Daughters, Sisters, Wives, Mothers and Aunts who ventured out on a career of entertainment.

Let me know what you think about this series, share your thoughts and comments, and make suggestions for another artist you think we should include on The SpotLight. and as always, thanks for making KHRadio a part of your day.
